About this table

The baskets in the box decide how a machine brews before you buy anything else. (dual-wall) baskets are forgiving with pre-ground coffee; baskets leave the resistance to the grind and the tamp. The table quotes each manufacturer's list of supplied baskets for ten home machines, with the document it comes from.

Manufacturers name their baskets differently. Breville says single wall and dual wall. Gaggia's manual lists a “Crema perfetta” filter, to be used only with the frothing jet device, and a traditional filter. Ninja lists a Double Basket and a Luxe Basket, and Lelit lists LELIT58 IMS filters and a blind filter. The table quotes these as published instead of labelling them pressurized or not where the manufacturer doesn't say.

De'Longhi's product page for the Dedica doesn't list the filters supplied, and Rancilio's own pages and catalogues give conflicting basket sizes for the Silvia, so both rows say the figure is not published.

Questions

Which stock baskets are pressurized?

Breville's dual-wall baskets are the pressurized ones and its single-wall baskets are not. The other makers' names don't say so directly, so check the underside: a pressurized basket has one small exit hole, a single-wall basket has holes across its base.

Which Breville baskets go with pre-ground coffee?

The Barista Express and Barista Pro manuals pair the dual-wall baskets with pre-ground coffee and the single-wall baskets with beans ground fresh; the sources list links to both manuals.

Will another maker's basket fit my portafilter?

Only if it is made for the same nominal size and your portafilter's depth and rim; see the portafilter size table. Baskets of the same size swap more readily than portafilters, but depth and rim shape vary between makers.

What is a blind filter?

A basket with no holes in its base. It goes in the portafilter for backflushing, the cleaning routine some machines support; it is not used for brewing.

filter basketThe perforated metal cup that sits in the portafilter and holds the coffee. Two diameters matter: the outer rim, which has to suit the portafilter, and the inner diameter, which sets the size of tamper and distribution tool that will fit. Baskets are either single-wall (non-pressurized) or dual-wall (pressurized), and come in single and double sizes.Glossary entry

pressurized basketA dual-wall filter basket. The inner wall is perforated, but coffee leaves through one small hole in the outer wall, and that restriction builds pressure even when the grind or tamp is uneven. That makes it forgiving with pre-ground coffee. Turn the basket over to tell: one small exit hole instead of a field of holes.Glossary entry

non-pressurized basketA single-wall filter basket with many small holes across its base. The resistance that builds brewing pressure comes from the coffee itself, so grind size, dose and tamping all change the shot. Also called a standard or single-wall basket. Bottomless portafilters are made for this type.Glossary entry

portafilterThe handled holder that carries the filter basket and locks into the machine's group head. Manufacturers quote a nominal portafilter size, which names the group it fits. The locking lugs (ears) must match the group too, so an aftermarket portafilter should be listed for your machine model, not only for the same size.Glossary entry
