About this table
A is sold by the diameter of its base, and the base has to fit the , not just the portafilter. The table gives the tamper size each manufacturer states for ten home machines, and where that tamper comes from: in the box, built into the machine, or sold by the manufacturer as an accessory.
A manufacturer's tamper is made for that manufacturer's baskets. Aftermarket baskets and tampers for the same group come in slightly different sizes, so a tamper that matches the stated figure is the safe choice for the stock baskets; for any other basket, compare the tamper's base with the basket's inner diameter. None of the six manufacturers states that inner diameter in the documents checked, so measure it if you need it.
De'Longhi, Ninja and Lelit state no tamper diameter for the Dedica, Luxe Café or Bianca in the documents checked, and those rows say so. For those machines, start from the portafilter size table and your own basket.
Questions
Why does the table say where each tamper comes from?
Because a tamper packed with the machine is sized for its stock baskets, while an accessory is sold for a range of machines. Breville packs or builds in a tamper with each of its five machines here; Gaggia's figure is for an accessory tamper it sells for its Classic machines; Rancilio's comes from its 2020 catalogue listing for the Silvia.
Can I use one machine's tamper on another?
Only if the other machine's basket has the same inner diameter. Machines that share a nominal portafilter size can still take baskets from different makers, so check the tamper against the basket you actually use.
Are tampers of the same nominal size interchangeable?
Not exactly. Makers size the base a little differently to suit different baskets, so two tampers sold for the same group can fit one basket more closely than the other. A base as wide as the basket won't go in, and one much narrower leaves loose coffee at the edge.
What if my machine shows no tamper size?
Measure the inner diameter of your basket with calipers, at the depth where the coffee sits, and choose a base slightly smaller than that.
